SPAYING FOR CHANGE is the result of a dream and seeing how effective many hands can be without ego getting involved.
Most people out there see streetdogs and have a moment of sadness. They do not understand the millions of dogs dying, diseased, in pain, dumped and living in deplorable conditions. It takes a truly exceptional person to move past the sadness and actually see the big picture and when those people actually do something about the problem, well, they become my heroes.
Chiquita’s Friends and Casa Sheila organized the first Spaying for Change last November and decided to keep the first one small. We had 10 teams up and down the Baja and did 1472 spays and neuters in two days. We were blown away by the people understanding the concept, wanting to be a part of something bigger than themselves and doing this because of the great love for the animals.
This year, we want to go bigger! We will be including anyone who wants to participate this year within simple parameters . We are asking people to do their clinics on November 9th and 10th. We are not telling you how to do your clinics or how many you can do, we just want the World to see what we are dealing with. The numbers don’t lie.
Work together, make teams, do whatever it takes. We will of course offer advice and be here for any questions. We are also going to do a wide donation plea where those who cannot do a clinic can help. Please please, we are changing the world for these animals. We depend on everyone to put pleas out for donations as well. We will have signage, we are working on a song and we will have advertising for you all to share. This is our opportunity to gather together, help each other out and truly make a difference for the animals and our world, who is in? So honored to be a part of the animal welfare movement in Los Cabos. PET Los Cabos Aida Trujillo and Evaristo Castro Rosas have an amazing rescue just outside Cabo San Lucas called Second Chance Ranch. They are the power couple of rescue AND spay and neuter campaigns in this area. If you want to volunteer to walk dogs, bring donations of collars leashes, or donate money they can use all the help you can give. They have horses, burros, dogs, cats there. Please come and visit our new kennels and playground for these amazing dogs.
The artwork alone is astounding. Artist took photos of some of my dogs and made a couple murals.

DANNY (now Duffy) has been adopted by Dave Congalton in Paso Robles. Danny was drowning in a devastating rainstorm on the streets of Tijuana January 2022. Honestly when Chiquita's Friends and Angelica Bribiesca and Tapia Bereenicee picked him up and took him to emergency vet in TJ, we did not think he would last the night.
That was January 2022 and he has been in loving care of Charlotte Meade at Meade Canine Rescue (a senior sanctuary in Paso)
Look at him now. When I found out last night I was crying with happiness for this senior.
Seniors make GREAT companions. They are so grateful for every minute and hugs of each day.
At this point I would like to acknowledge the ladies in Tijuana who worked tirelessly and helping these poor dogs Stay alive and find rescue in the United States without them so many dogs would die. They just do it out of pure love.

Mother and child reunion… Ruby was pregnant when we scooped her off the streets of Tijuana 4 months ago. She had ONE puppy.. only one baby. Willow is that baby and they met yesterday for the first time Blue Table Wine & Cheese Bar.
Willow is a perfect pure breed beagle baby.
Ruby was excited but she had no clue that was her baby. Ruby needs a home! She is fabulous… Baby daddy got adopted by Matt Friedlander

Remembering the amazing Ruth Seymour of KCRW Santa Monica. A leader and relentless force of nature who devoted her life to making KCRW a leader in public news and social and cultural consciousness and inspiration. Many careers were made because Ruth was there at the microphone. She became a great friend to myself and Gilliland’s cafe since we opened in 1984. She hired many over lunch there and fired a few. When she had the fund drives we always donated gift certificates AND if we were lucky enough to have Ruth on air with our donation she NEVER followed a script and of course she ALWAYS collected the most money of any on the drive. Cleo (Cleopatra eyes) has the most beautiful eyes of any dog. She is one of the dump moms, born on the streets of Mexico, dumped at the landfill in Mos Cabos , gave birth and kept babies safe from feral dogs and starvation and was rescued by Chiquita's Friends and Casa Sheila .
Her pups all found homes but she hasn’t yet. She is now in the Agoura Hills waiting for her forever family.
This girl is incredibly smart, a fast thinker, beyond sweet despite a rough life! She was treated for TVT a sexually transmitted disease and is now fully healthy. Truly special dogs are hard to find, she is one of them. Let this Queen rule your house and let her give you all her love and loyalty. Geraldine Gilliland

Guerra is one of the moms that kept her 15 puppies alive at the Los Cabos dump/landfill in Mexico through determination and intelligence (and eating rocks)
She was rescued by Chiquita's Friends. We have rescued hundreds of dogs but she is one of the really, really special dogs. Her intelligence is scary, she is also very, very athletic. She would excel at any working dog work and then come home and be really chill, hello, from dump to taking over your bed pillows type of girl!
She is fixed, vetted, vaccinated and READY to go home.
I know there is a person out their who won’t be intimidated by a dog smarter than them! She would be good at police work, competitions, active family or.....!

Sammy has been adopted! By 2 moms. Thank you Yuya Duran and Bridget Blitsch and Mari Stanley for helping me bring this delicious puppy into the world and teaching him how to eat. WE NEED YOUR HELP! Meade Canine Rescue and Chiquita’s Friends are bringing spay and neuter to Bakersfield and Porterville, California, after years of helping animals in Mexico.
Thanks to the amazing and committed Diane Bentz, DVM, from Simi Valley Non-Profit Spay and Neuter Clinic, we are bringing the work that makes a difference home to local communities in dire need.
On March 14 we will spay and neuter 100 dogs in Bakersfield and 50 dogs in Porterville. It’s a drop in the bucket but it’s a start and won’t be our only clinic.
If you understand the issues of overpopulation resulting in the huge numbers of healthy animals killed, you also understand exponentially how many lives are saved through spay and neuter.
A donation of $65 covers one canine and will be greatly appreciated
